In the autumn of 1998, Toyota Motor Corporation adopted the world's first mass-produced car with titanium metal matrix composites engine valves, which was the result of the developments of ultra-high performance new materials and low-cost mass production technology at the same time. This article describes how this was achieved, and what the remaining issues are.
