A direct methanol
fuel cell (DMFC) is an attractive power source for
a wide range of applications from vehicles to portable
uses. The cell performances of DMFCs were evaluated
using a reference electrode at high temperatures.
House-made grafted membranes, which have a higher
conductivity and a lower methanol permeability than
Nafion, were also used for this system. In addition,
the room temperature performances without auxiliary
units were tested. Based on the experimental results,
suitable applications for DMFCs were discussed in
terms of the system efficiency and the energy density.
Finally, we propose future opportunities and issues
for DMFCs.
