The ion conductive behavior was studied by quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) technique. The QENS of superprotonic conductor revealed the long-range hopping behavior of protons. The QENS signal of lithium for lithium manganese spinels was firstly detected and the self diffusion coefficient was estimated as order of 10-8cm2.

By TOF-SIMS analysis of friction surfaces, the differences in the adsorption behavior of additives between oils of different compositions and tested on different metal surfaces were clarified. The causes of the differences in friction coefficient among various combinations of engine oils and sliding materials were partly explained by the adsorption behavior of the additives. -

Pd nanoparticles were dispersed to a depth of 100 nm from the surface region of an oxidized cycloolefin polymer film. The Pd catalyst was partially reduced to the metallic form in the surface region of the modified polymer film.

This paper proposes a technique of position estimation which is applicable to urban environments where the accuracy of GPS positioning is deteriorating. The method, utilizing GPS Doppler processing and gyros, calculates trajectories by extracting the most reliable azimuth, which is then integrated with vehicle speed.

The mechanism of shell mold cracking during the casting of an aluminum alloy was elucidated. A criterion for shell mold cracking is proposed based on Weibull's statistical method, enabling the prediction of shell mold cracking on the basis of statistical properties of the tensile strength of the shell mold material. -
8. Application of Optical Tweezers to Viscosity Measurements of Multi-layer Coatings

A viscometer was developed using optical tweezers that is available for non-destructive measurement of coatings. Multi-layer coatings were prepared by the 3-Wet process and the viscosity of the clear coating was evaluated by the viscometer. The effect of a solvent transfer on the viscosity was observed for the first time.

A novel engine cycle-simulation program was developed to reproduce diesel combustion characteristics for the wide changes of engine operating parameters. In this approach, multi-zoning model and Probability Density Function (PDF) model are newly created to deal with spray formation process with multiple-injection and in-cylinder spatial inhomogeneities, such as local equivalence ratio and temperature.
