STRATEGIC INNOVATIVE RESEARCH AND FRONTIER RESEARCH

In principle, research groups belonging to the Frontier Research and Strategic Innovative Research Domains are independent. Each frontier leader or program manager leads his/her own group and pursues the challenging goal of his/her project. These two domains include a wide variety of research fields ranging from quantum computing to genome engineering, for example.
A project in the Frontier Research Domain is proposed by a frontier leader him/herself and considered to be in an early stage. On the other hand, a program manager in the Strategic Innovative Research Domain has an eye on the translating his/her pioneering research into reality. We believe a future “Senior Fellow” will be born from these two domains and make Toyota Central R&D Labs more famous and competitive.

Optical Sensors Using Graphene Quantum Dots

We have developed transparent and wearable broadband optical sensors using graphene quantum dots. These graphene dots can be pasted onto curved sensor surfaces, applied in broadband imaging systems, or used to sense physiological information.

Nanosensing

By advancing technology for nanoelectrical mechanical systems (NEMS), we have developed nanoscale antennas capable of transmitting and receiving radio waves using mechanical vibration. This research is aiming to build nanoscale sensing systems that incorporate new physical concepts exceeding the limits of electromagnetics.
