This paper presents a novel solution to the long-standing trade-off between high efficiency and high power capability in inductors, which are essential magnetic components in power conversion systems. By integrating multiple inductors and introducing a structure that allows the magnetic coupling coefficient to be switched according to operating conditions, the proposed approach suppresses losses under light-load conditions while maximizing performance under high-power operation. This technology enables both miniaturization and performance enhancement of power conversion equipment, offering a new design option for next-generation power conversion systems and contributing to improved efficiency in industrial and energy-related applications.
2025 Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition First Prize Paper Award

This paper presents a new contactless connector designed to automate electric vehicle (EV) charging. By integrating multiple functions—such as power transfer and power conversion—into a single magnetic coupler, the proposed system simultaneously achieves high power, high efficiency, and high reliability while maintaining a contactless configuration. The resulting high-power yet compact design improves the installability and reliability of charging equipment. It is expected to support the wider adoption of EVs and enhance the convenience of future charging infrastructure. This research was conducted in collaboration with Toyota Motor Corporation.
