Research on “CO2 reduction reaction using sunlight and water in a semiconductor-molecular hybrid photoreaction system (Monolithic Artificial Leaf, MORLIE®)” by Takeshi Morikawa et.al., was published in Accounts of Chemical Research.

Artificial Photosynthesis, which synthesizes carbon compounds from water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) using solar energy, is a technology that converts CO2 into substances that can be utilized again by storing light energy in the synthesized compounds. In this paper, we introduce the semiconductor-molecule hybrid photoreaction system developed in our laboratory, which is a technology that combines uniquely different functions of semiconductors and metal complex molecules. This paper describes the demonstration of the principle of carbon compound synthesis from CO2 using visible light energy, the "artificial leaf" in the form of a monolithic electrode realized by the principle, and the efficiency of solar energy conversion and storage exceeding those of plants. In addition, the material properties, system requirements, and reaction mechanisms necessary to realize these technologies are also explained.
This technology is expected to contribute to a carbon-recycling society in the future.
