“Analysis of Graphite Surface in Lithium-Ion Batteries”, by Hideaki Oka et al. was published in the Journal of Power Sources.

Graphite is widely used as negative electrode material in lithium-ion batteries owing to its stability even at low potentials because it forms a film on the surface of its particles. However, the battery performance of graphite can decrease due to the excessive growth of this film. In this study, surface analysis and electrochemical characterization techniques are used to clarify the relationship between the surface structure of graphite and formed film. Furthermore, fundamental electrochemical properties of graphite electrodes linked to battery characteristics are investigated. Results of this study may contribute to make guidelines for the particle design of graphite for extending the life of lithium-ion batteries.
