The study on “The relationship between e-hailing services and traditional regional public transit,” conducted by Keiichiro Hayakawa in collaboration with Hiroshima University was published in Transportation Research Part B: Methodological.
E-hailing services are currently widespread in many areas while traditional public transportation services such as local bus services are shrinking. This decline is associated with an increase in transportation-related inconvenience and significantly deteriorates the quality of life of transit-dependent people who cannot drive themselves. This study proposed an analytical model to theoretically and numerically examine the impact of e-hailing services on public transport into a region with traditional public transit. The investigation revealed that the relationship between the services was determined by a region-specific reliance on automobiles and that transit hubs between the services plays important role for the regions. Further, the study demonstrated a paradox—the introduction of e-hailing services may increase regional travel costs. This finding disclosed the importance of an integrated design encompassing traditional public transport and e-hailing services to avoid such contradictions. The study results could contribute to designing new mobility services ensuring unrestricted movement for all individuals in all regions.
