Quantification of side reactions in lithium-ion batteries by synchrotron operando measurements

A study conducted by Hideaki Oka et al. was published in the Journal of Power Sources.

Lithium-ion battery is a device that stores and releases electric charge by the movement of lithium ions between the positive and negative electrodes. Clarifying the relationship between battery usage and side reactions is an important insight for expanding the use of batteries in vehicles. In this study, by combining the operando measurement at the Toyota Beamline in SPring-8 and electrochemical analysis, we quantified the side reactions at positive and negative electrodes at temperatures/voltages beyond the normal range. These results are expected to be valuable for battery design/control to ensure durable and safe use of lithium-ion batteries.
